THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Christianity and the Catholic Church played a major role in Europe during the Middle Ages. The local church was a major part of the town life. People attended weekly ceremonies, where they were married, confirmed, and buried at the church. The church even confirmed kings on their throne giving them the right to rule. The medieval catholic church became very rich and powerful. People had to give them a tenth of what they earned to the church as a tithe, and the wealthy sometimes gave them land and donations for weddings and other special ceremonies.
