How were castles made?
The first castles were made of wood and mud. When they found that wood burnt, castles were upgraded to thick stone walls for more protection as it would last longer.
Who lived in castles?
Most peasants did not live in castles, but when trouble came they would hurry inside the castle and shut the gates. Lower people in the medieval times would usually have to climb rough and stingy paths to get to the castle itself.
Where were castle located and why?
Castles were usually located in the highest point of the village so they could see when trouble was coming from a distance. This gave them more time to prepare for battle and defence of the castle and people. Castles had a drawbridge that was used to lower and lift over the moat, which is a ditch filled with water.
What did castles contain?

The castles contained; bedrooms, hallways, womens rooms, laundry, the keep, barracks, chapels and the great hall where formal feasts and meetings were held. Spiral staircases in the castle were always escalated clockwise, as it was a technique for when enemies ascended the stairs. This was a great way of defence because they would be given a huge disadvantage in the way of their sword arm because most people were right handed.
